wanted me to paint fan art! The character's name is Artesia, and I must admit I had never even heard of her. [link] [link] She's a heavily armored fighter woman, so she can't be a bad character. :)

Would be perfect without the boobs shape of the armor.

And why's that? Boob armor is bad?

Most of the time I find it vulgar, ugly and really unrealistic. However, here it's not really the problem since there's no cleavage, BUT two things bother me : first, her boobs would have to be huge to fit in this armor, in a way that would be almost disproportionate for her body ; second : I really think it would restrict her movements, because those big, solid shapes would block her arms during some moves. This is why this part of her armor disappoints me. It's a beautiful piece, and she looks like she can pull a real fight but for this part of the picture, which looks very unatural and impractical compared to the rest.

Keep in mind, though, that I really dislike boobs armors in general, so my opinion is biased. I feel like this image is saying "look I'm a warrior with a cool armor AND HUGE BOOBS" rather than "looke I'm a warrior with a cool armor", but from the other commentaries I see that most viewers are perfectly happy with this :)

Mark Smylie is the writer of the the Artesia comics. They are pretty cool and the art is really good. But about 2006 is just stopped drawing them because he got 'too busy'. He's written a novel in the world, he's come out with an rpg book in the world, he's completely revamped his website about his comic book twice, but he still hasn't added a single page to the story since he stabbed his main character through the chest with a sword. Quite the clifhanger, and he insists that the character isn't dead... he's just not working on the comic. Which put him at about 3.5 graphic novels out of the 7 to 22 that were promised. Not unusual for a fantasy comic author, but I still call him a flake.

Maybe I'm just jealous that he's produced more art then I have, but then again I haven't gone about breaking promises either.

Your work, as usual, is amazing. Thanks for posting, I always enjoy seeing what you come up with next.

That smile in conjunction with tha hair levitating toward tha sides makes her look quite evil 2 me but...I don't often judge by initial appearances, lol!

Are you aware that Artesia had her own comic not to long ago? Have any idea what has become of it?

By the way, wonderful fan art.

Hey,

YAY! I'd almost given up on seeing serious "Artesia"-fan art here on dA. And now - your great picture! :w00t:

Really, artists should turn to Mark Smylie more often. With Artesia he has created such a rich character and the world around her is overflowing with creativity. He did a great job publishing the first three volumes with others to come (or at least he keeps saying so) and I love his art. But: He can't draw faces and/or noses. It's true! Most of the characters in his comics you can only keep apart from their haircut.

So, I'd love to see more dedicated artists like you to interpret his original art and give us a new take on Smylie's characters ... But I guess, I won't. :-(
So, thank you a lot for this stand-alone picture. It's so much appreciated!

CU & greetings

The armor looks nice. It's vary form fitting, and doesn't have those huge unnecessary parts. They are mostly replaced with tight joint pieces that cover in a fashion that could be called realistic if not for some of it's scale. Ya, I'm overlooking the skirt with no upper leg armor, but I don't think it would be as fun if she was wearing some. She does need the mobility after all to do that dual wielding.

The hair is a really pretty curl, and nice dark brawn color. One of the highlights on her her face look a bit odd, but I know you want to show off the entire face, even if you don't replicate the sources else where in the image. Giant light in the background (explosion?). Another thing I just have to look past because I know it's your style. The lighting itself is pretty good, and I think the huge amount of highlights shining off the armor makes the drawing. I have to assume the real light is coming off her right side and the image looks just fine. Other works you might have gone with a uniform color scale for light across her entire body but it looks so much better that each piece has it's own lighting perspective. The left side and right side might share a similar tint but each piece on that side has it's own unique angle.

Nice little background adding in those extra men. I like the embers near the bottom, it's a nice touch to break up the colors from top to bottom.

Thank you. Where's that odd face highlight?

To the outside of her left eye. The reason I say this is because the dominant light is coming from her right side, and there isn't anything on her left that clearly shows off light a dimmer white light over there. There is some light which you can see on the armor mostly coming from the back lighting as a highlight, and a much softer, whiter light on some of the armor too. The brightness of the highlight I would have thought it would clearly be show in another area on that left side.

Keep in mind I only think it's a tiny bit brighter then it should be. I'm clearly not some lighting expert, so it's just some random art admirer's opinion :D I'm always critiquing (more like nit picking) your work, but I hope it helps . ^.^

The highlight's pretty loyal to my reference photo, but even a small darken/lighten change can affect the result.

Not the most practical armor design, but it's really difficult to make one that looks somehow feminine

Why should it look feminine? It's supposed to protect the user.

because most artists have this thing about wanting to make their subjects look good, as opposed to realistic
